25.07.07 :: that is a reality check my fat, happy ass can’t cash

thanks to all for your imput from yesterday's post: "what's in a suit?"

going on pure gut instincts, i've decided to wear this little number all week long while on vacation with my biological family. won't they be impressed? i think so.

granted, this suit wasn't even one of the nine options from yesterday; just a little somethin'-somethin' i picked up when i was in my early 20s -- and the bitch still fits! get over myself.

note the silver clasps. how shiny and reflective. it's to ward off the sharks and jellyfish that will no doubt try to eat me while i swim the atlantic.

so, i'm set. suit, check. tanning lotion, check. sanity, jury's still out on that one...

happy hump day, everyone.

24.07.07 :: what's in a suit?

i'm having trouble deciding what would be appropriate to wear on the beach during my upcoming vacation. it wouldn't be such a difficult decision if i were traveling, say, to rehoboth beach or fire island, but i'll be on the outer banks of north carolina. with my mother. and father. and brothers and sisters-in-law. and my nephews. you see my quandry?

please pick at least 3 suits that would be appropriate for this family trip, and the rest i can use as kleenex or something...

22.07.07 :: absolute scrumtrilescence! or is it?

ok, so i pass by the museum of fine arts-houston almost every day. sometimes two or three times a day. depends.

opening today is mfa-h's show entitled "red hot--asian art today." outside the museum is a huge, red, plastic dinosaur looking as if it's caged for shipment to the u.s. called "jurassic age, 2006," the bright sculpture is the product of artist sui jianguo and will be featured throughout the red hot show's run, which documents the rise of asian contemporary art over the past 10 years.

it is said of sui's work: "it combines the socialist realism style in which he was trained with the american pop style of today's global consumer culture." jurassic age is part of sui's "made in china" series, so named for the huge "made in china" stamp across this and other dinosaur's chest.

one critic wrote, "made in china ironically comments on the chinese export trade where trademarks are usually hidden or concealed. the red dinosaur is a metaphor for china: the world's fastest-growing economy due largely to the export of mass-produced consumer goods. here, the "rising economic dragon" is personified as a dinosaur caged in a shipping crate, turning the sculpture into an export itself."

sui said of this particular work: "the reason i enlarged the toys to such an enormous size is to highlight the political economic system behind [them]. dinosaur toys are designed by some company from a western country, and produced in china, then commercially distributed to the whole globe. it is the result of transnational capitalist production."

ok, so like i was saying, i get the whole dinosaur thing. that's great. what i need some help with is the two other sculptures shown outside the museum flanking the entryway. any ideas? i'm completely clueless...

18.07.07 :: i'm gettin' a little too old for that whorey look

first of all, i really don't want frequent readers of lonestarsteve.com to get the mistaken impression that all i do on my weekends is load on some makeup and wear a dress and heels around the house and in public, lipsynching to liza and madonna and cher. i only do that on tuesdays. just so we're clear.

that said, i just wanted to share some photos (taken by yours truly, but also sent to me by cisco and mike) from the casino night fundraiser held on saturday to benefit the 2008 houston round up. costumes were rented, makeup was applied by professionals (complete professionals), and fun was had by all. enjoy. [note: and, yes, just because i know that you're asking, the headdress did give me a headache, but the boots were quite comfortable to walk around in.]

another note: sorry for taking so long to post these photos. i was working on printing out some wallet-sizes for my father. he's going to be so very proud!

12.07.07 :: half-nekkid thursday, part xiii

apparently, saturday night live's amy poehler's aunt linda didn't like my half-nekkid thursday photo for today. she gave it a "what?"

it was taken over pride weekend whilst i was rollerblading with a friend around the montrose.

you just can't please some people, you know?

well, at least she didn't give me a "oh, boy!" or a "ghawd!"

11.07.07 :: pour some sugar on me (it's not just for breakfast anymore)

wanting to save some money, last night i purchased the store brand of one of my favorite artificial sweeteners. i was shocked to see it actually. i mean, i've seen the pink one before, and the blue one as well, but never the yellow.

it was an easy sell. all i needed to see was the sign next to the product on the shelf. it said: "compare the carcinogenic ingredients in apriva™ brand artificial sweetener to those in splenda™ brand -- same quality, same sweetness, same health threats, but now with a low, low price!"

gotta love america, right?

grocery shopping discoveries aside, i realized last night that most of my problems lately are of the "high class" bent. what i mean is: there's not much wrong in my life, but what is wrong is trivial to say the least.

for example, let's take problem no. 1: i can never get a hair appointment when i want to. this goes for cuts and color, girls. you'd think my hairdresser was jonathan antin, for christ's sake. i can't schedule a month and a half in advance. i don't know what i'll be doing this afternoon let alone a month and a half from now? for the love of god...

problem no. 2: i had to buy yet another cell phone this week. that's five phones purchased, used, and broken in less than 4½ years. my first phone was a piece of ka-ka. the second and third were even worse. the fourth -- my beloved pebl™ -- was my favorite but over the weekend it stopped working (and by "stopped working" i mean that i can no longer hear anyone through the handset. i can only converse through the speakerphone option. lovely, i know).

now i'm discovering that my latest purchase, the razr™, is not as high-tech as i thought it was. so, what i need to do now is spread the joy and call t-mobile and rip some poor customer rep a new one about it.

problem no. 3: match.com. that's all i'm sayin'. (do i even need to elaborate? honestly.)

happy hump day to all, and to all a good rest of the week.

10.07.07 :: a fifty second capacity of mind, too demanding?

july? how the hell did that happen? and where have i been? and what have i been up to? wouldn't you like to know...

my sister-in-law says that she checks out lonestarsteve.com every now and again and when there hasn't been an update in a while, she starts to worry what's happened to me. bless her heart. i'd be nothing without my fans...

what i've been doing is traveling a bit. and i'm getting ready to travel some more.

i just got back on sunday from a 5-day jaunt to pennsyltucky for a family reunion. it was awesome. for months now i've been working hard on a "memory book" to pass out at the gathering, so i've been occupied. but the project is over now, and i can begin concentrating on other things. like what, though?

otherwise, life is status quo. still doing well on diet and exercise. weighing in at about 172 lbs. every week (down from 205 lbs. at the height of winter 2006-07). still single, and fine with that. and still busy as all bloody hell at work and elsewhere.

speaking of single, i had a brainstorm the other day to start up a gay speed dating service in the bayou city. thoughts? have you ever been to one of those things? do they work, or are they just as dumb as they sound??
