30.05.07 :: you gotta get yourself some marble columns ...

my neighbors have just installed a marble column outside their front door. it reminded me of scarlett johansson's last guest spot on saturday night live ...

marble columns: elegant, sturdy, and bursting with class.
nothing says i've got money and power like marble columns.
put marble columns in your house,
that place is going to look like a mansion ...
just ask my daughter, lexi.
can you believe it? you can stick these things everywhere.
they make your house look like a palace, like a castle.
people are gonna look at your house and go,
"who lives there, the pope?"
"what is that? is that playboy mansion?"
it's rediculous.
imagine pulling up to your house and seeing these and going,
"oh my god. i live here."
how nuts would it be to own this one,
or that one, this one, or that one?

29.05.07 :: a well-scrubbed, hustling rube with a little taste ...

and just where do you think you're going with your good bag and your cheap shoes? i watched a lot [read: a lot] of movies this memorial day weekend. not much else to do, what with the 3-day deluge and all.

this movie was one of them...

you're sooo ambitious, aren't you...?
you know what you look like to me,
with your good bag and your cheap shoes?
you look like a rube. a well-scrubbed,
hustling rube with a little taste...
good nutrition has given you some length of bone,
but you're not more than one generation
from poor white trash, are you, officer starling...?
that accent you're trying so desperately to shed --
pure west virginia. what was your father, dear?
was he a coal miner? did he stink of the lamp...?
and oh, how quickly the boys found you!
all those tedious, sticky fumblings,
in the back seats of cars,
while you could only dream of getting out.
getting anywhere -- yes?
getting all the way -- to the f...b...i.

other movie picks included: candy, the da vinci code, and breaking and entering. i only rented da vinci code because i was embarrassed of the fact that i'd never seen it. oh, and that i own the book and have never picked it up to read it. oh, and while your gasping for breath from that last sentence, just know that i know that you did the same damned thing, so zip it.

and i only rented the other two movies because one contained heath ledger and the other contained jude law. well, at least i'm honest, right?

have good tuesdays. people work on tuesdays.

27.05.07 :: boys in the pool ...

about 2 years ago, maybe even longer, a few guys i know threw a pool party over memorial day weekend. a similar event was to take place this weekend, but was canceled due to inclement weather here in houston as well as other logistical reasons.

since i missed it this year, i decided to pull out these photos from that first pool party and think happy thoughts about the summer to come.

happy memorial day. enjoy your 3-day weekend. make it count.

25.05.07 :: carnival of the animals [aka animal magnetism]

i went to see the houston ballet last night. they were putting on a show of christopher wheeldon's carnival of the animals. i'm not much for the ballet. opera is more my thing. but it helped that these tickets were for one of the founders' boxes.

it also was well worth it for two other reasons:

001 :: to see oliver halkowich jumping around on stage in tights

002 :: to see john lithgow dressed as an enormous school nurse being carried around by guys who all look like oliver halkowich jumping around on stage in tights.

and i was beginning to wonder if there even was a god.

have a great friday. and a good holiday weekend. make it count.

14.05.07 :: you chose your words like weapons. here we go: battlestations.

yesterday. what a waste of air and space. i had it in mind to do so much and ended up doing absolutely nothing. worse than nothing, actually. i ended up watching t.v., which to me is the biggest waste imaginable of anyone's time here on earth. now that i've written it, i'm full of regret. i feel as though i let myself down. and now that i'm faced with having to go into work this morning, and extinguish all of those fires that i left burning on friday, all i can think about is the time i wasted yesterday and how much i'd want to do those things now. today. instead of playing the fireman.

but what's passed is past, and now i must don my red and yellow suit and bring my hose all that way to douse the flames. this is not going to be pretty. my aggrivation level being what it is lately, i hope to maintain composure. i've got a huge knot in my gut. it doesn't feel as though it will ever loosen.

11.05.07 :: looking ahead [read: glad it's all over]

it's friday. not much more to say about it. i'm so very happy to have made it through the past 2 weeks relatively unscathed.

highlights for my upcoming weekend include -- but are not restricted to -- taking in a meeting tonight and getting to see some people who i really miss; meeting up with the boyz at the school for a volleyball game tomorrow afternoon; shopping for some much-needed jeans that fit me better; and otherwise lazing about the apartment, doing this and that.

my next break from life will be a trip to pennsyltucky over july 4th weekend for a family reunion. should be great. then, a few weeks after that, comes my vacation to the outer banks of north carolina. i'm so completely psyched for that trip. get to see my 'phews, who i know have grown leaps and bounds since christmas.

more, so much more, later kids.

10.05.07 :: fater, mutter, und ich

i cannot express in words just how elated i am to be back in the bayou city. traveling -- for work, that is -- completely bites the big one. and i'm grateful i don't have to do it often. i'm just sayin'.

this family, which i photographed making their way into the mobile, ala., airport, was supposed to be on my flight back to houston, but they never made it to the plane.

total mystery to me as to why.

stupid family.

06.05.07 :: the never-ending month of may, cont.

the good news is: i'm nearly halfway through two of the most difficult weeks of my life. my professional life, that is. i am exhausted.

i'm in alabama now, of all places. i'm staying at a place called point clear. i'll be covering a conference here.

it's a nice enough place. it's coastal, and there are pelicans and seagulls flying about.

the amenities are good: coffee, shampoos & lotions, comfy beds ...

now if only the hallways of the hotel didn't remind me of the shining. jesus.

"danny's not here, mrs. torrance. danny's dead, mrs. torrance."

02.05.07 :: and the joy keeps on coming ...

i've dreaded these first two weeks in may. i've been dreading them for quite some time. now, don't get me wrong. i'm making the most of them. i honestly am. i'm just none too happy about having to live through them.

i don't know how you all are with your jobs, but i've been terrible with mine. i've struggled for years over whether to stay or go, and years have gone by, and i'm still there. something to assess in 2007 and hopefully to change in 2008, right?

this week, i've been attending this. and on sunday i fly to east bumf*ck, alabama, to attend this. could two weeks have even been packed with more excitement? i think not.

keep on keepin' on, and i'll be posting more often from here on out.

in other news, i just found these two photos. one was taken in mid-february 2007 and the other was just taken a few days ago. see any differences? work in progress, to be sure...
