23.09.05 :: stormtripping, part 2

here are some photos documenting my plan for staying safe during this bitch of a storm, which is less than 24 hrs away from the coast. hover over each photo for its caption.

i'm hunkered down in my apartment with my friend, brandon, and my neighbor and friend, mary. with us we have my cat, badger; brandon's dog, stanzy; and mary's cats, ta and alfred. a virtual managerie.

we are all well hydrated and fed, and prepared for the worst. today we are just trying to relax and enjoy this day, which has turned out to be -- almost eerily so -- a perfect, 80-degree, breezy day in houston...

be thinking about us, and please pray for all those people still stuck in traffic along the evacuation route as well as those who have gotten to safer (and higher) ground. they will most likely lose their homes to flooding along with everything they own.

another katrina? not exactly. this event has taken on its own horrifying characteristics and will probably go down in history for quite a few reasons. one of which for sure will be the largest evacuation attempt in u.s. history (the most important qualifying word being "attempt").

i will blog tomorrow to let you know how everything panned out. i'm hoping for the best yet expecting the worst...

22.09.05 :: stormtripping (a.k.a. rita's gone mad, muriel!)

today was one of the most emotionally draining days on record for me. and since my pc is still cooperating with me, and since we still have power, why not blog about it?

the quandry that all of us houstonians are faced with is simply this: to stay or to go? is rita going to be a good witch or a bad witch? manditory advisories for the evacuation of coastal areas aside, the rest of the city is in some serious ka-ka. and here's why: there are 3-4 evacuation routes mapped out, but these are all -- even at this late hour -- glorified parking lots. in addition, just try to find gasoline on your way north while moving at 2 mph with a million other cars.

so, does one safely venture out into the unknown and risk being trapped in one's car, without gas, alongside the highway, with a category 5 hurricane blowing up your ass? or does one hunker down in one's domicile, stocked with gallon upon gallon of water, and ride this puppy out?

good question. i'm going to sleep on it for now and get back to you in the a.m. over coffee and a few dozen cigarettes. for those of you already out of harm's way, be safe and return soon. for those of you in my position, let me know what you would do.

muchas grassy-ass.

19.09.05 :: it's september. people blog in september...

my apologies for not writing any sooner than this. i had every intention to, honest. you see, my two-and-a-half-year-old, piece of shit dell pc has been acting up lately, and it now decides -- on its own -- when i can and when i can't use it for such things as blogging, checking e-mail, surfing the internet for porn, and the like.

just today, i've somehow jerry-rigged the temperamental, useless machine so that i could at least post this, my first entry since the start of september. but other than computer problems, i wanted to relay that everything else is fine here in the lone star state. of course, the bayou city might just suffer a fate similar to that of our sister city to the east, new orleans, if tropical storm rita develops into a hurricane and tracks right for us, but besides that, things are peachy.

in a few weeks i will be receiving a new thinkpad from ibm so my entries here will probably become, let's just say, more consistent. until then, you'll have to settle for what you get.
